The Tell Tale Heart
The Tell Tale Heart was about this guy who insisted he wasn't crazy and he told this story about a man whose eye was blue, and made him nervous. He loved this old man but whenever his eye fell on him, his blood ran cold. He then decided to get rid of his eye forever. He planned to kill the man. So every night he peeked in on the man while he was sleeping. He di this for eight days. On the eighth day of doing this, the old man awakened to a sound and sat up in bed for an hour listening. Finally he opened his lattern and shone the light on his eye and the old man's heart started pounding hard. The crazy man couldn't handle it. He thought the neighbors would hear, so he tackled the old man, and the man screamed and his heart stopped. He burried the old guy under the floor. In the morning the plice came and asked to look around. They got done looking around and he asked them to sit down, and then he started to get paranoid and thought he was hearing the old guy's heart beat through the floor and he told on himself, so he really was crazy. The line that I think represents this story, is on pg 3. "He had the eye of a vulture- a pale blue eye, with a film over it... I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever." I think it's this line because the story is about how he is paranoid of the eye, and him trying to kill this old guys, and that's what this line was about.
The main character was crazy, but he denied it. Throughout the story he kept saying that he wsn't mad or crazy, and that if he was crazy, he wouldn't have been able to do what he did and stay sane. But that is the reason he is crazy, because he was able to do what he did, and not flip out. He said that he loved the man, and that the old man never offeneded him, but there was something about him that made him paranoid. He came to the conclusion that it was the man's eye. He said that whenever the eye fell upon him, it made his blood run cold. So he mad this plan to kill the old man. And when he opened the door on the last day, the light fell on upon his eye, and that kind of set him off, and he jumped on the old man and killed him. So in a way, the ey provoked him. A line that I think represents the character is on pg 8. I think that this line, "Villians! Disemble no more! It is the beating of his hideous heart!" represents the character because he was crazy, and he turned himself in, when the police didn't suspect him. It was his guilty conscience and paranoia, and phsyco ways that made him kill the innocent old guy, and turn himself into the police. Him doing all of these things, showed that he was not mentally stable.
The theme of this story I think, is death. Throughout the story he is planning the death of this old man, and then he carries out the plan. And in his other stories that he has written, they are alson about death. So Edgar Allen Poe, bases his stories on "death". He repeats over and over again that he is not crazy. He says these things in a lot of his stories, so he seems to be obsessed with people thinking he is crazy, and that he has to constantly tell them that he is not crazy to kind of comfort himself from their ridicule. Some global things that he includes in this story is time.He makes all of his attempts to kill this man at 12:00 midnight, everynight. He says the time a couple of times throughout the story. The theme could also be about his obsession with "not being crazy". A line in this story that represents the theme is on pg.3. "True! Nervous- very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and I am! But why will you say that I am mad?... How, then am I mad? Harken! and observe how healthily and calmly I can tell you the whole story." I think this line represents the story because he is obsessed with proving to people that he is not crazy, but he isn't phased that he just killed a man.
