Today in History

Well, yesterday in history, we took notes on the French Revolution. It was kind of interseting. Louis XIV left France deeply in debt. He had engaged in deficit spending. He had a lavish lifestyle, which was incredibly costly. I was thinking that this king was pretty stupid because he kept spending money that wasn't even there, and he didn't care about his people. Then there were bad harvests in the late 1780's, that sent food prices soaring and brought hunger to poor people and peasants and city dwellers. I thought that it was kind of cool that the 3rd estate declared themselves to be the national assembly and invited delegates from the other two estates to help them write a constitution. Then when the reform -minded clergy and nobles joined the assembly, Louis XIV grudgingly accepted it. I also thought it was cool that on July 14, 1789, more than 800 parsians gathered outside the Bastille, and demanded weapons. This became a symbol of the French Revolution.
